"November Progrom 1938"

The night from November 9 to November 10, 2018 marks the 80th anniversary of the pogrom night of 1938, when thugs of the NSDAP and SA set synagogues on fire before everyone's eyes, smashed shop windows of Jewish shops, abused Jewish citizens and demolished their homes. During and immediately as a result of the riots, well over 1,300 Jews died. The events of the pogrom night have long since become an integral part of collective memory and the culture of remembrance in Germany, as the major Berlin themed exhibitions of the commemoration years 2008 and 2013 illustrate. Far less attention, however, was paid to the more than 27,000 Jewish men who were arrested throughout Germany after the pogrom night and deported to concentration camps. Their fate marked the beginning of a new phase in National Socialist persecution policy. It will be the focus of the special exhibition sketched here. Source: Sachsenhausen Memorial Foundation
